Ringworm can affect any body region including the tail and requires fungal culture for diagnosis. Allergic dermatitis from various causes may involve the tail area. Demodicosis can cause localized skin changes requiring skin scraping to rule out. Bacterial pyoderma from any cause affecting the tail region requires differentiation, particularly when secondary infection complicates stud tail. The characteristic greasy, waxy presentation and specific dorsal tail base location typically distinguishes stud tail from these other conditions.

Complications of stud tail include secondary problems that develop from persistent glandular overactivity and sebum accumulation. Bacterial folliculitis develops when opportunistic bacteria colonize plugged follicles, causing pustules, pain, and more extensive skin damage. Furunculosis represents deeper infection with follicular rupture and intense inflammation requiring more aggressive treatment. Chronic cases develop permanent skin changes including hyperpigmentation, scarring, and lichenification that become increasingly difficult to manage and may not fully resolve even with successful control of active disease. Hair loss in the affected area may become permanent if follicles are severely damaged. Recognizing and promptly treating these complications improves outcomes for affected cats.
