Stud tail, medically known as supracaudal gland hyperplasia or tail gland hyperplasia, is a skin condition affecting the area at the dorsal base of the tail where a concentration of sebaceous glands, known as the supracaudal or tail gland, is located. This condition occurs when these specialized glands become overactive, producing excessive amounts of sebum that accumulates on the skin and fur, creating a greasy, waxy appearance. While classically associated with intact male cats, hence the colloquial name stud tail, the condition can occur in neutered males and female cats as well, though less frequently. The condition ranges from mild cosmetic concerns to more significant problems with secondary infection and skin damage.
The causes of stud tail relate to increased activity of the sebaceous glands located in the supracaudal region. These glands normally produce sebum, an oily substance that helps maintain skin and coat health, but hormonal influences, particularly testosterone in intact males, can stimulate excessive production. The exact mechanism triggering hyperactivity is not fully understood in all cases, as the condition occurs in neutered cats and females where testosterone influence should be minimal. Contributing factors may include individual variation in gland sensitivity, genetic predisposition to sebaceous gland activity, and possibly stress or other hormonal influences beyond testosterone alone.
The impact of stud tail on affected cats varies considerably based on severity. Mild cases may cause only cosmetic concerns, with a greasy patch of fur that some owners find objectionable but that causes the cat no discomfort. More significant cases develop accumulation of waxy material, matting of fur, and changes in the underlying skin including inflammation and blackhead formation. Severe cases may develop secondary bacterial infections of damaged follicles, causing pain, fur loss, and more serious skin changes. The condition can affect cats of any breed and typically develops after sexual maturity, though cases in younger cats do occur.
Stud tail is generally manageable with appropriate treatment, though the underlying glandular activity may persist and require ongoing maintenance in many cases. Mild cases often respond to improved grooming and cleansing alone. More significant cases may require medicated shampoos, topical treatments, and attention to secondary infections. In intact males, neutering may reduce or resolve the condition by eliminating testosterone stimulation, though this is not guaranteed.
