Potential complications of streptococcal infection depend on the severity and location of the primary infection. Septicemia, the spread of bacteria through the bloodstream, is a serious complication that can lead to multi-organ involvement and potentially death. Streptococcal bacteria can cause secondary infections in the heart valves, leading to endocarditis, or in the joints, causing septic arthritis. Chronic or recurrent skin infections may develop in cats with ongoing immune compromise. Respiratory infections can progress to pneumonia with significant morbidity. Preventing complications relies on prompt diagnosis and treatment of initial infections, maintaining good immune health, and monitoring for signs of worsening or spread. Cats that have experienced severe streptococcal infection should be monitored for potential long-term effects on affected organ systems.
