Dental and oral problems can occur alongside lip fold dermatitis, particularly when infection spreads or eating is affected. Seborrhea and other primary skin conditions may predispose to or complicate skin fold infections. Managing skin fold dermatitis in affected cats often requires attention to these associated conditions for optimal overall health.

Conditions producing similar clinical signs to skin fold dermatitis require differentiation for appropriate treatment. Allergic dermatitis can cause facial redness, discharge, and itching that mimics or accompanies fold dermatitis, requiring identification and management of allergic components. Feline acne creates lesions around the chin that may overlap with lip fold involvement. Dermatophytosis can affect facial areas and require fungal culture for differentiation. Demodicosis may localize to facial regions and cause similar inflammatory changes. Eosinophilic granuloma complex affecting lips or face requires histopathological differentiation in some cases. Autoimmune skin diseases rarely present with facial involvement resembling severe fold dermatitis. Careful diagnostic workup ensures appropriate treatment when presentation is atypical or response to standard therapy is inadequate.

Complications of skin fold dermatitis include progression of infection and secondary damage to adjacent structures. Deep bacterial infection extending beyond the skin surface can develop from chronic, inadequately treated fold dermatitis, potentially requiring systemic antibiotics and intensive treatment. Chronic inflammation leads to permanent skin changes including hyperpigmentation, scarring, and lichenification that become increasingly difficult to manage. Facial fold dermatitis can contribute to eye problems if infection spreads or chronic moisture affects periocular structures. Secondary yeast infections frequently complicate bacterial skin fold infections, requiring combined antifungal and antibacterial treatment. Recognizing and promptly addressing these complications improves outcomes for affected cats.
