Severe pain episodes may cause dramatic behavioral responses. Muscle tremors from various causes differ from seizure activity but can look concerning. Narcolepsy and cataplexy, though rare in cats, cause sudden collapse. Behavioral episodes including aggression outbursts or apparent hallucinations might represent focal seizure activity or could have other explanations.

Potential complications from seizures themselves and from treatment require ongoing vigilance. Repeated seizures can cause cumulative brain damage, potentially leading to cognitive decline, personality changes, or worsening seizure control over time. Status epilepticus is a life-threatening complication requiring emergency intervention. Physical injury during seizures, including tongue bites, broken teeth, and trauma from falling, can occur. Aspiration pneumonia may develop if cats vomit during seizures. Long-term anticonvulsant medication use carries risks including liver damage from phenobarbital requiring regular monitoring. Some cats develop tolerance to medications requiring dose adjustments or additional drugs. Recognizing complications early through regular monitoring enables timely intervention.
