Rhabdomyosarcoma is a rare and aggressive malignant tumor arising from skeletal muscle cells, or rhabdomyocytes, that can affect cats. This cancer belongs to the broader category of soft tissue sarcomas and is characterized by its origin in striated muscle tissue, which is the type of muscle responsible for voluntary movement. Rhabdomyosarcoma is considerably less common in cats than other soft tissue sarcomas such as fibrosarcoma, but it represents a significant diagnosis when it occurs due to its aggressive biological behavior. The tumor can develop in virtually any location where skeletal muscle is present, including the limbs, head, neck, trunk, and even the bladder in a specific variant called botryoid rhabdomyosarcoma. Unlike many other feline cancers that predominantly affect older cats, rhabdomyosarcoma can occur across a wide age range and has been reported in young cats as well as middle-aged and senior felines.
The causes of rhabdomyosarcoma in cats remain poorly understood, as is typical for many spontaneous feline cancers. The tumor develops when muscle cells undergo malignant transformation through accumulated genetic mutations that disrupt normal cell growth regulation. No specific environmental or lifestyle factors have been consistently linked to rhabdomyosarcoma development in cats. The tumor may arise from mature skeletal muscle cells that undergo dedifferentiation, or from muscle precursor cells that fail to differentiate properly and instead proliferate abnormally. Histologically, rhabdomyosarcoma cells retain some characteristics of muscle cells, allowing pathologists to identify the tumor's muscle origin through specialized testing.
The impact of rhabdomyosarcoma on affected cats can be substantial, depending on the tumor's location, size, and behavior. Tumors in the limbs may cause lameness, swelling, and progressive loss of function in the affected leg. Head and neck tumors can interfere with eating, breathing, or vision depending on their specific location. Bladder rhabdomyosarcoma may cause urinary symptoms including blood in the urine, straining to urinate, or complete urinary obstruction. The aggressive nature of rhabdomyosarcoma means that tumors can grow rapidly and invade surrounding tissues extensively, making early detection and aggressive treatment essential for the best possible outcomes.
Treatment of rhabdomyosarcoma requires an aggressive multimodal approach similar to that used for other soft tissue sarcomas. Wide surgical excision is the foundation of treatment, aiming to remove the tumor with generous margins of normal tissue to capture microscopic extensions of cancer. Radiation therapy may be added before or after surgery to improve local control. Chemotherapy is often considered given the aggressive nature of this tumor and its potential for metastasis. The prognosis for cats with rhabdomyosarcoma varies considerably depending on the tumor's location, how completely it can be removed, and whether metastasis is present. Early detection and prompt, aggressive treatment offer the best opportunity for extended survival, making it critical for owners to seek veterinary evaluation of any new masses or unexplained symptoms promptly.
