Lipomas are typically soft, well-circumscribed, and slow-growing, while liposarcomas may be firmer and less clearly defined, though these characteristics are not reliable for definitive diagnosis. Fine needle aspiration may suggest a fatty tumor but often cannot distinguish between benign and malignant fat tumors. Histopathological examination of tissue biopsy is required for definitive diagnosis and grading. Lipomas generally require no treatment unless they are causing problems due to location or size, while liposarcomas require surgical excision and potentially additional therapy.

Other soft tissue sarcomas can occur in cats and share some characteristics with liposarcoma. Fibrosarcoma is the most common soft tissue sarcoma in cats and may occur spontaneously or in association with injections. Myxosarcoma, rhabdomyosarcoma, and undifferentiated sarcoma are other soft tissue tumors that may develop in similar locations. These different sarcoma types are distinguished by histopathological examination, which identifies the cell type of origin. While all soft tissue sarcomas share certain biological behaviors, including local invasiveness and potential for metastasis, specific prognosis and optimal treatment may vary somewhat among tumor types. A pathology report that specifies the exact tumor type and grade provides essential information for treatment planning.

Complications that may arise in cats with liposarcoma include local tumor recurrence and metastatic spread. Local recurrence occurs when microscopic tumor cells remaining after surgery grow into a new visible mass at or near the original tumor site. The risk of local recurrence is higher when surgical margins are narrow or positive for tumor cells. Metastasis, most commonly to the lungs, can occur and carries a more guarded prognosis. Secondary conditions may develop related to tumor location, such as limb dysfunction from masses affecting the legs or organ dysfunction from abdominal tumors. Treatment-related complications, including surgical wound problems or side effects from radiation or chemotherapy, may also occur. Regular monitoring following treatment facilitates early detection of any complications.
