The causes of retinal detachment in cats differ significantly from those in humans and dogs. While traumatic injury can cause retinal detachment in any species, the most common cause in cats is systemic hypertension, or high blood pressure, often secondary to chronic kidney disease or hyperthyroidism. When blood pressure becomes severely elevated, the delicate blood vessels of the retina can leak fluid or hemorrhage, causing the retina to lift away from its underlying support. Inflammatory conditions, infections, and certain cancers can also lead to retinal detachment in cats, as can inherited eye diseases that weaken the attachments between retinal layers.
The impact of retinal detachment on affected cats is profound and immediate, as vision loss can range from partial visual impairment to complete blindness depending on the extent of the detachment. Cats with bilateral retinal detachment experience sudden, total blindness that dramatically affects their ability to navigate their environment, find food and water, and interact with family members. Single-eye detachment may be less obvious initially, as cats can compensate well using their remaining eye, but still represents significant visual impairment. Beyond the immediate vision loss, retinal detachment often indicates serious underlying systemic disease that requires diagnosis and treatment to protect overall health and potentially prevent detachment in the remaining eye.
Treatment outcomes for feline retinal detachment vary widely depending on the underlying cause, the duration of the detachment before treatment, and whether appropriate therapy can be initiated. When detachment results from hypertension, rapid blood pressure control may allow the retina to reattach and vision to be partially or fully restored, particularly if treatment begins within one to two days of detachment. However, long-standing detachments or those associated with permanent retinal damage rarely recover vision even with optimal treatment. The prognosis for underlying systemic conditions like kidney disease or hyperthyroidism is a separate consideration that affects the cat's overall health and longevity. Prompt veterinary attention is essential when any sudden vision change is observed, as the window for potential vision restoration is narrow.
