Polyneuropathy is a neurological condition in cats characterized by dysfunction of multiple peripheral nerves throughout the body. Unlike conditions affecting a single nerve, polyneuropathy involves widespread nerve damage or dysfunction that typically affects nerves in a symmetric pattern, most commonly impacting the longer nerves supplying the limbs first. This results in progressive weakness, muscle wasting, and sensory or autonomic abnormalities that can significantly affect a cat's mobility and quality of life.
The peripheral nervous system consists of nerves that extend from the spinal cord to muscles, skin, and organs throughout the body. These nerves carry motor signals that control movement, sensory information about touch, temperature, and pain, and autonomic signals that regulate involuntary functions. When polyneuropathy develops, any or all of these nerve functions may be compromised, leading to varied clinical presentations depending on which nerve types are most affected.
Polyneuropathy in cats can result from numerous underlying causes, including inherited genetic conditions, metabolic diseases, toxic exposures, inflammatory or immune-mediated processes, infections, and cancer. In some cases, despite thorough diagnostic evaluation, no specific underlying cause can be identified, and these cases are termed idiopathic polyneuropathy. The pattern of nerve involvement and rate of progression often provide clues to the underlying cause.
The prognosis for cats with polyneuropathy depends heavily on the underlying cause and how much nerve damage has occurred before treatment begins. Some forms of polyneuropathy are treatable or even reversible when the underlying cause is addressed promptly, while others progress despite treatment and may result in severe disability. Early recognition of symptoms and comprehensive diagnostic evaluation provide the best opportunity for successful management. Supportive care and rehabilitation can help maintain quality of life even when complete recovery is not possible.
