While papillomavirus infections are well-documented in many species, they are relatively uncommon in cats compared to dogs or humans. The condition most frequently affects cats with compromised immune systems, including those with feline immunodeficiency virus, feline leukemia virus, or cats receiving immunosuppressive medications.
The infection occurs when papillomavirus particles enter the body through small breaks or abrasions in the skin or mucous membranes. Once inside epithelial cells, the virus hijacks cellular machinery to replicate and produce characteristic growths known as papillomas or warts. These growths develop as the virus stimulates abnormal proliferation of epithelial cells, creating raised, often cauliflower-like lesions. In cats, papillomaviruses have been associated with several distinct conditions, including viral plaques, cutaneous papillomas, and in some cases, squamous cell carcinoma.
The impact of papillomavirus infection on a cat's health varies considerably depending on the cat's immune status and the specific type of lesion that develops. In immunocompetent cats, many papillomavirus infections remain subclinical or produce minor lesions that resolve spontaneously without treatment. However, in immunocompromised cats, the infection can produce multiple persistent lesions that may progress to more serious conditions. Viral plaques, which appear as darkly pigmented, scaly patches, have been associated with an increased risk of developing squamous cell carcinoma, making monitoring particularly important.
Treatment for feline papillomavirus infection depends on the nature and extent of the lesions. Many cases resolve on their own as the cat's immune system eventually clears the virus, a process that may take several months. For persistent or problematic lesions, surgical removal, cryotherapy, or laser ablation may be recommended. Early detection and veterinary evaluation are essential, particularly for lesions that change in appearance or fail to resolve, as this allows for appropriate monitoring and intervention.
