Papilloma, commonly known as a wart, is a benign tumor of epithelial tissue that can affect the skin and mucous membranes of cats. These growths are typically caused by papillomaviruses, a diverse family of DNA viruses that specifically target epithelial cells. While papillomas are well-documented in many species including dogs and humans, they are comparatively rare in cats, though their incidence may be underreported due to their benign nature and tendency to resolve spontaneously in some cases. Feline papillomas can occur as solitary lesions or as multiple growths, depending on the specific viral strain involved and the cat's immune status.
Papillomaviruses cause papillomas by infecting epithelial cells and altering their growth patterns, resulting in the characteristic raised, rough, or cauliflower-like growths. The virus integrates into the host cell's DNA and produces proteins that stimulate cell division while evading the immune system. In healthy cats, the immune system eventually recognizes and eliminates infected cells, leading to spontaneous regression of papillomas in many cases. However, cats with compromised immune function may develop more extensive or persistent papillomas that require intervention.
Feline papillomas most commonly occur in the oral cavity, on the skin, and occasionally on the eyelids or other mucosal surfaces. Oral papillomas may appear on the lips, gums, tongue, or pharynx, while cutaneous papillomas can develop anywhere on the body. The appearance of papillomas varies from small, raised bumps to larger, irregular masses with a characteristic warty or cauliflower-like surface texture. While generally benign, papillomas can cause problems if they interfere with eating, breathing, or vision, or if they become traumatized and secondarily infected.
Treatment for feline papillomas depends on their location, size, and the degree to which they affect the cat's quality of life. Many papillomas, particularly those that are small and not causing problems, can be monitored for spontaneous regression without intervention. Larger or problematic papillomas may be surgically removed, and various other treatment modalities have been explored. The prognosis for cats with papillomas is generally excellent, though immunocompromised cats may require more aggressive treatment and ongoing monitoring. Understanding the viral nature of these growths is important for preventing transmission to other susceptible cats.
