Leptospirosis is a bacterial infection caused by spirochete bacteria of the genus Leptospira that can affect multiple organ systems in cats. While this disease is well-recognized and relatively common in dogs, it occurs only rarely in domestic cats. The feline species appears to have a natural resistance to clinical leptospirosis, though cats can become infected and may shed the bacteria in their urine without showing obvious signs of illness. When clinical disease does occur in cats, it typically affects the kidneys and liver, potentially causing significant organ damage if left untreated.
The bacteria responsible for leptospirosis are transmitted primarily through contact with contaminated water, soil, or the urine of infected animals. Cats that spend time outdoors and have exposure to wildlife, rodents, or standing water sources face the highest risk of infection. The spirochete bacteria can survive for extended periods in warm, moist environments, making certain geographic regions and seasonal conditions more conducive to transmission. Urban and rural cats alike may encounter the organism, though hunting behaviors and access to areas frequented by wildlife increase exposure risk.
Despite its rarity in cats, leptospirosis carries significant health implications when it does occur. The infection can lead to acute kidney injury, liver inflammation, and in severe cases, multi-organ failure. Additionally, leptospirosis is a zoonotic disease, meaning infected cats can potentially transmit the bacteria to humans and other animals. This public health consideration makes accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment particularly important, even in species where the disease is uncommon.
Leptospirosis in cats is treatable when diagnosed early, typically responding well to appropriate antibiotic therapy. However, the nonspecific nature of clinical signs and the relative rarity of the disease in felines can make diagnosis challenging. Veterinarians may not initially suspect leptospirosis in cats presenting with kidney or liver problems, potentially leading to delayed diagnosis. Cat owners should be aware of this condition, particularly if their cats have outdoor access and potential exposure to wildlife or contaminated water sources.
