Cerebrospinal fluid is normally produced within the brain ventricles, flows through a series of connected chambers, and is absorbed into the bloodstream at specific sites. Hydrocephalus develops when there is an obstruction to this flow, overproduction of fluid, or inadequate absorption. The accumulated fluid causes the ventricles to expand, compressing the brain tissue against the skull and potentially causing permanent damage. In congenital cases, the skull may also become enlarged and dome-shaped as it expands to accommodate the increased intracranial pressure.
The impact of hydrocephalus on affected cats depends on the severity of fluid accumulation and the amount of brain damage that has occurred. Mildly affected cats may show only subtle behavioral or neurological abnormalities. Severely affected cats often exhibit obvious neurological deficits including vision problems, incoordination, seizures, and cognitive impairment. The condition can affect development in kittens, leading to failure to thrive and learning difficulties. Quality of life varies considerably, with some cats living comfortable lives with minimal symptoms while others experience significant disability.
Treatment options for hydrocephalus include medical management to reduce fluid production and surgical placement of a shunt to drain excess fluid. The choice of treatment depends on the severity of symptoms, the underlying cause, and various practical factors. Early diagnosis and intervention offer the best chance for a favorable outcome.
