Galactostasis, commonly referred to as milk retention, is a condition affecting female cats in which milk accumulates within the mammary glands without adequate drainage or expression. This condition occurs most frequently in nursing queens whose kittens have been weaned abruptly, in cats experiencing pseudopregnancy, or in mothers who have lost their litters. While galactostasis is not inherently dangerous in its early stages, the accumulation of milk can lead to significant discomfort and potentially progress to more serious complications if left untreated. The condition is relatively common among intact female cats and represents an important concern for breeders and owners of unspayed females.
The underlying cause of galactostasis relates to the normal physiological processes of lactation becoming disrupted. When a queen produces milk but lacks adequate nursing stimulus from kittens, or when milk production continues after weaning, the mammary glands become engorged with accumulated milk. Hormonal influences, particularly prolactin, drive continued milk production even when nursing has ceased. The retained milk causes the mammary tissue to become swollen, firm, and uncomfortable, creating a cycle where the distended glands may continue to produce milk while having no outlet for release.
The impact of galactostasis on affected cats ranges from mild discomfort to significant pain and potential health complications. Cats with milk retention often exhibit reluctance to lie down normally, sensitivity when the mammary area is touched, and general signs of discomfort. In severe cases, the accumulated milk can create an environment conducive to bacterial infection, potentially leading to mastitis. The condition affects quality of life by causing persistent discomfort and can interfere with normal activities such as grooming, eating, and resting comfortably.
Fortunately, galactostasis is highly treatable when identified early and managed appropriately. Treatment typically involves reducing milk production through dietary modification, restricting fluid intake temporarily, and sometimes using medications to suppress lactation. Most cats respond well to conservative management within several days to a week. Early recognition of the signs and prompt veterinary consultation are essential to prevent progression to mastitis or other complications. With proper care, the prognosis for cats with galactostasis is excellent, and most return to normal comfort levels relatively quickly.
