Complications that may develop from frostbite include secondary bacterial infection of damaged tissues, which is one of the most common and concerning complications. Necrotic tissue provides an ideal environment for bacterial growth, and infection can spread to healthy tissue or enter the bloodstream causing sepsis. Permanent tissue loss resulting in disfigurement, while not a complication per se, is a potential outcome of severe frostbite. Chronic pain or hypersensitivity in previously frostbitten areas may develop in some cats. Previously frostbitten tissue has increased susceptibility to future cold injury, creating a cycle of vulnerability if cold exposure recurs. Recognizing and promptly addressing complications improves outcomes and helps prevent additional tissue damage or systemic illness.
