Many cats develop flea allergy dermatitis, a hypersensitivity reaction to flea saliva proteins that produces severe itching, hair loss, and skin damage even from minimal flea exposure. Heavy infestations, particularly in young kittens or debilitated cats, can cause life-threatening anemia through blood loss. Additionally, fleas serve as vectors for tapeworms and several bacterial diseases, expanding their impact beyond simple parasitic irritation.
Effective flea management has been transformed by modern antiparasitic medications that provide convenient, safe, and highly effective protection. Monthly topical or oral preventives can eliminate existing infestations and prevent new ones from establishing. Environmental treatment addresses the developmental stages living off the host. With consistent use of appropriate products, flea infestations can be eliminated and prevented from recurring. However, the persistence of flea problems in many households often stems from inconsistent product use, inadequate environmental treatment, or failure to treat all pets in the household.
