Chronic malnutrition causes muscle wasting, immune compromise, and organ dysfunction. Secondary megaesophagus may develop above a chronic stricture. Recurrence of stricture after dilation is common and represents an ongoing management challenge. Monitoring for these complications and responding promptly when they occur improves overall outcomes.
