Neurological effects ranging from temporary confusion to permanent damage may occur. The delayed nature of some complications makes any electrical injury a veterinary emergency requiring monitoring even when initial symptoms seem mild.
Prognosis for electrical injury depends heavily on injury severity and treatment speed. Cats with minor shocks causing only localized oral burns often recover fully with appropriate wound care. However, those experiencing significant current exposure require intensive monitoring and treatment, particularly for pulmonary complications. The key to optimal outcomes is recognizing electrical injury and seeking immediate veterinary care, understanding that apparent stability does not guarantee safety from delayed complications. Prevention through cord protection and environmental management remains the most effective approach to this potentially devastating injury.
