Cryptorchidism, commonly known as undescended testicle or retained testicle, is a developmental condition in male cats where one or both testicles fail to descend into the scrotum from the abdominal cavity. In normal feline development, the testicles form near the kidneys and gradually migrate through the inguinal canal into the scrotal sac before or shortly after birth. When this migration process is incomplete or fails entirely, the affected testicle remains either within the abdomen or lodged in the inguinal canal. This condition occurs in approximately two to four percent of male cats, making it one of the more common congenital reproductive abnormalities seen in feline practice.
The failure of testicular descent is primarily attributed to genetic factors, though the exact mechanism of inheritance is complex and not fully understood. Hormonal imbalances during fetal development, abnormalities in the gubernaculum (the tissue that guides testicular descent), or physical obstructions can all contribute to incomplete migration. In most cases, only one testicle is affected, a condition called unilateral cryptorchidism, while bilateral cryptorchidism involving both testicles is less common but does occur. The retained testicle may be located anywhere along the normal path of descent, from the area near the kidney to just outside the inguinal ring.
Cryptorchidism has significant health implications for affected cats beyond simple reproductive concerns. The retained testicle is exposed to higher body temperatures than it would experience in the scrotum, which can lead to reduced fertility and an increased risk of testicular cancer over time. Cats with cryptorchidism remain hormonally intact and will display typical male behaviors including spraying, aggression, and roaming, even though they may appear to have been neutered if only the descended testicle is visible. The condition also poses challenges during neutering procedures, as locating and removing a retained testicle requires more extensive surgery than a routine castration.
The good news for cat owners is that cryptorchidism is entirely treatable through surgical intervention. Veterinarians strongly recommend neutering all cryptorchid cats to eliminate the risk of testicular cancer, prevent unwanted breeding, and reduce hormone-driven behaviors. Early detection and treatment lead to excellent outcomes, with most cats recovering fully from the surgical procedure. Because cryptorchidism has a hereditary component, affected cats should never be bred, and responsible breeders screen for this condition when selecting breeding animals to reduce its prevalence in future generations.
