Cats become infected by inhaling fungal spores from the environment, with the organisms typically colonizing the nasal cavity first before potentially spreading to other body sites. The development of cryptococcosis begins when cats inhale basidiospores or desiccated yeast cells from environmental sources. Cryptococcus neoformans is strongly associated with pigeon droppings and soil enriched with avian excreta, while Cryptococcus gattii is found in association with certain eucalyptus trees and other environmental niches. Once inhaled, the organisms typically establish infection in the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses, where they can cause chronic nasal disease. In some cats, the infection remains localized to the upper respiratory tract, while in others it disseminates through the bloodstream or by direct extension to affect the lower respiratory tract, central nervous system, eyes, skin, and other organs.

Nasal cryptococcosis causes chronic nasal discharge, sneezing, and facial deformity from granulomatous masses that can become quite disfiguring. Central nervous system involvement, which occurs in a significant percentage of cases, produces neurological signs ranging from subtle behavioral changes to seizures, blindness, and vestibular dysfunction.
