Secondary bacterial infection may occur if the compromised corneal surface is colonized by opportunistic organisms. Corneal vascularization, the growth of blood vessels into the normally avascular cornea, represents the body's healing response but permanently reduces transparency. Chronic, untreated edema can progress to corneal scarring and permanent vision loss. Recognizing and treating edema early prevents these complications and preserves the best possible visual outcome.
