Coccidioidomycosis, commonly known as Valley fever, is a serious fungal infection caused by Coccidioides immitis and Coccidioides posadasii, soil-dwelling fungi endemic to the arid and semi-arid regions of the southwestern United States, Mexico, and parts of Central and South America. This condition develops when cats inhale fungal spores that have become airborne from disturbed soil, particularly during dust storms, construction activities, or digging. While cats are less commonly affected than dogs, feline coccidioidomycosis can be a severe and potentially life-threatening disease that requires prolonged treatment and careful management.
The development of Valley fever in cats begins when microscopic spores called arthroconidia are inhaled into the lungs, where they transform into spherules that multiply and trigger an immune response. In many cats with healthy immune systems, the infection may be contained within the lungs and cause only mild respiratory symptoms or remain subclinical entirely. However, in other cats, particularly those with weakened immune systems, the infection can disseminate through the bloodstream to affect distant sites including bones, joints, skin, lymph nodes, eyes, and the central nervous system. This disseminated form of the disease is much more serious and challenging to treat.
The impact of coccidioidomycosis on feline health ranges from minimal to devastating, depending on the extent of infection and the organs involved. Primary pulmonary infection may cause coughing, difficulty breathing, and general malaise, significantly affecting the cat's quality of life even when confined to the respiratory system. Disseminated disease involving bones and joints causes pain, lameness, and mobility problems. Central nervous system involvement can lead to seizures, behavioral changes, and other neurological deficits. The chronic nature of this infection, which typically requires months to years of treatment, places a significant burden on both affected cats and their caregivers.
Treatment for coccidioidomycosis in cats is possible but requires commitment to long-term antifungal therapy, often lasting six months to several years depending on the extent of infection. Early detection dramatically improves prognosis, as cats treated before dissemination occurs have much better outcomes than those with widespread disease. Veterinary care is essential for diagnosis, which requires specialized testing, and for ongoing monitoring during the extended treatment period. Cat owners in endemic areas should be aware of this disease and seek veterinary attention promptly if their cat develops respiratory symptoms or other signs consistent with Valley fever.
