Feline infectious peritonitis can cause inflammatory brain lesions and neurological disease. Granulomatous meningoencephalitis produces inflammatory masses that may mimic abscesses on imaging. Toxoplasmosis and other protozoal infections can cause focal brain lesions. Cryptococcal meningitis and other fungal infections may produce mass lesions. Accurate differentiation through appropriate diagnostic testing is essential because treatments differ significantly among these conditions.

Potential complications of brain abscesses include several serious outcomes that may develop during the course of the disease or its treatment. Abscess rupture can lead to meningitis or ventriculitis, spreading infection to the membranes surrounding the brain or the fluid-filled ventricles within it. Increased intracranial pressure can progress to brain herniation, a life-threatening emergency. Seizure activity may become recurrent, requiring long-term anticonvulsant therapy. Permanent neurological deficits may result from destruction of brain tissue by the abscess or surrounding inflammation. Recurrence of abscess is possible if treatment is incomplete or if the underlying source of infection is not addressed. Monitoring for these complications and addressing them promptly when they occur is an important aspect of brain abscess management.
