Trichomoniasis, commonly known as canker in pigeons and doves or frounce in raptors, is a highly contagious protozoal infection that primarily affects the upper digestive tract of birds. Caused by the flagellated protozoan parasite Trichomonas gallinae, this disease is one of the most significant infectious diseases affecting columbiform birds worldwide and poses a serious threat to wild bird populations, captive collections, and pet birds alike. The infection targets the oral cavity, esophagus, and crop, causing characteristic caseous lesions that can obstruct feeding and, in severe cases, prove fatal. While pigeons and doves serve as the primary reservoir hosts, the disease affects a wide range of avian species including raptors, finches, budgerigars, and occasionally other psittacines.
The causative organism, Trichomonas gallinae, is a pear-shaped, single-celled parasite equipped with flagella that enable motility within the host tissues. This organism cannot survive for extended periods outside the host, requiring direct transmission through close contact, contaminated food, or contaminated water sources. Adult pigeons frequently harbor the organism asymptomatically, becoming carriers that transmit the infection to their offspring through crop milk during feeding. The parasite invades the mucosal lining of the upper digestive tract, causing progressive tissue destruction and the formation of the yellow-white caseous lesions characteristic of the disease. The severity of infection depends on factors including the virulence of the particular Trichomonas strain, the immune status of the host bird, and concurrent stressors.
The impact of trichomoniasis on affected birds ranges from mild, self-limiting infections to severe, life-threatening disease. In its mildest form, birds may show only subtle lesions that resolve without treatment. However, moderate to severe infections cause significant morbidity through pain, difficulty swallowing, and progressive malnutrition as lesions obstruct the oral cavity and esophagus. Severely affected birds may be unable to eat or drink, leading to rapid decline and death within days if untreated. Beyond individual bird health, trichomoniasis has significant implications for wild bird conservation, having caused devastating die-offs in finch populations in Europe and North America in recent years. For bird keepers, the highly contagious nature of the disease can lead to rapid spread through aviaries and lofts if not identified and managed promptly.
Fortunately, trichomoniasis is generally treatable when identified early and managed with appropriate antiprotozoal medications. Drugs from the nitroimidazole class, including metronidazole and ronidazole, are highly effective against Trichomonas gallinae when administered correctly. Early detection significantly improves outcomes, as treatment can eliminate the parasite before extensive tissue damage occurs. However, delayed treatment or severe infections carry a more guarded prognosis, as advanced lesions may cause permanent damage or secondary complications. Prevention through good hygiene, minimizing shared water sources, and reducing contact between carrier species and susceptible birds forms the cornerstone of disease management in multi-bird environments. Avian veterinary consultation is essential for accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment, as other conditions can cause similar oral lesions.
