When the esophageal lumen becomes narrowed, birds experience difficulty swallowing, regurgitation, and inability to consume adequate nutrition. Esophageal strictures in birds typically develop as a result of injury or disease affecting the esophageal wall. Common causes include scarring from previous burns caused by overheated hand-feeding formula, damage from foreign body ingestion and removal, chemical burns from caustic substances, infections that damage the esophageal lining, and trauma from external injuries or feeding tube placement. The healing process following esophageal injury often involves scar tissue formation, and if this scarring is extensive or circumferential, it can contract and narrow the esophageal passage. Strictures may develop within weeks of the original injury or may take months to become clinically significant.
The impact of esophageal stricture on a bird's health is significant because it directly impairs the ability to eat. Birds with mild strictures may be able to swallow soft or liquid foods but struggle with solid items, while those with severe strictures may be unable to swallow anything. Progressive weight loss and malnutrition develop as the bird cannot obtain adequate nutrition. The accumulated food above the stricture may be regurgitated, and aspiration of this material into the respiratory tract is a serious risk.
