Vitamin D3 is essential for calcium absorption in the intestines, and without adequate levels, even birds receiving calcium-rich diets cannot properly utilize this mineral for bone development. Indoor birds are at particular risk because they lack exposure to ultraviolet B radiation from sunlight, which is necessary for the synthesis of vitamin D3 in the skin. Seeds-only diets, which are notoriously deficient in calcium and vitamin D3, are a leading contributor to rickets in pet birds.
The impact of rickets on a bird's health can be significant and long-lasting. Affected birds develop soft, pliable bones that bend and deform under normal weight-bearing and movement. This leads to characteristic bowing of the legs, spinal curvatures, beak deformities, and overall stunted growth. Beyond the skeletal abnormalities, birds with rickets often experience generalized weakness, difficulty perching, reluctance to move, and in severe cases, pathological fractures from minimal trauma. The condition affects the bird's quality of life substantially, limiting mobility, feeding ability, and normal behaviors.
Fortunately, rickets is highly treatable when caught early, and the prognosis for young birds receiving prompt nutritional correction is generally good. Treatment involves correcting the underlying nutritional deficiencies through dietary modification, calcium and vitamin D3 supplementation, and providing appropriate ultraviolet lighting. However, skeletal deformities that have already formed may be permanent, underscoring the critical importance of early detection and intervention.
