These receptors are found in the brain, autonomic ganglia, adrenal medulla, and neuromuscular junctions. Initial stimulation causes excitation, increased heart rate, elevated blood pressure, and gastrointestinal hypermotility. As receptor overstimulation progresses to blockade, paralysis develops affecting both the skeletal muscles and the respiratory system. Death from nicotine poisoning typically results from respiratory muscle paralysis and respiratory failure. The biphasic nature of nicotine toxicity, progressing from excitation to depression, creates a characteristic but often rapidly fatal clinical picture.
The impact of nicotine toxicity on affected birds is severe and frequently fatal, often progressing from initial exposure to death within minutes to hours. Birds may exhibit rapid onset of tremors, seizures, vomiting, weakness, and respiratory distress. The small body size of birds means that even a small amount of nicotine relative to what a human might handle represents a massive toxic dose. A few puffs on a cigarette butt, a taste of e-liquid, or chewing on a nicotine patch can deliver lethal doses to companion birds. The rapid absorption and action of nicotine means that symptoms develop quickly, and death may occur before treatment can be obtained if exposure is substantial.
Treatment of nicotine toxicity requires immediate veterinary intervention with aggressive supportive care. No specific antidote exists, so treatment focuses on decontamination when possible, controlling seizures, supporting respiration, and maintaining cardiovascular function until the nicotine is metabolized and eliminated. The prognosis depends heavily on the amount of nicotine ingested and how quickly treatment is initiated. Birds that survive the initial toxic crisis generally recover well if they receive appropriate supportive care. Prevention through elimination of nicotine exposure in the bird's environment is by far the most effective approach to this dangerous condition.
