Myocardial infarction in birds develops through mechanisms similar to those in humans, though with important species-specific differences. The avian heart lacks true coronary arteries like those in mammals; instead, birds have coronary vessels that supply the heart muscle with oxygenated blood. When these vessels become blocked by atherosclerotic plaques, blood clots, or emboli, the heart tissue they supply loses its blood supply. Without oxygen and nutrients, heart muscle cells begin dying within minutes. The extent of damage depends on which vessel is blocked and how quickly, if at all, blood flow is restored.
The impact of myocardial infarction on affected birds ranges from subclinical damage to sudden death, depending on the size and location of the infarct. Small infarctions may cause minimal symptoms or go entirely undetected, potentially only discovered on postmortem examination. Larger infarctions affecting critical areas of the heart can cause immediate collapse and death. Birds surviving the acute event may experience impaired cardiac function, arrhythmias, and progressive heart failure. The condition significantly affects quality of life and life expectancy in surviving birds.
Treatment of myocardial infarction in birds focuses on supportive care during the acute emergency and management of underlying atherosclerosis to prevent future events. Unlike in human medicine, interventional procedures to restore blood flow are not available for avian patients. Prognosis depends on the extent of heart muscle damage and the bird's response to supportive care. Prevention through proper nutrition, weight management, and regular veterinary care offers the best strategy for reducing myocardial infarction risk in predisposed species. Early detection and management of atherosclerosis may help prevent progression to acute coronary events.
