These unique bacteria lack cell walls, distinguishing them from typical bacteria and making them naturally resistant to antibiotics that target cell wall synthesis, such as penicillins and cephalosporins. Multiple Mycoplasma species affect birds, with Mycoplasma gallisepticum being particularly important in both poultry and wild finch populations, while other species including Mycoplasma synoviae, Mycoplasma meleagridis, and various species affect different bird groups. Mycoplasma infections occur in psittacines, passerines, poultry, raptors, and many other bird species, causing respiratory disease, conjunctivitis, joint infections, and reproductive problems depending on the specific Mycoplasma species involved.
The causes of Mycoplasma infection relate to direct transmission between birds and, significantly, vertical transmission from infected parents to offspring. These organisms spread through respiratory secretions, contaminated dust, and direct contact between birds. Infected birds may shed organisms even when appearing healthy, serving as reservoirs that perpetuate infection within flocks. Vertical transmission through infected eggs means chicks may hatch already carrying Mycoplasma organisms inherited from their parents. Stress, concurrent illness, poor environmental conditions, and inadequate nutrition increase both susceptibility to infection and severity of disease when infection occurs. Unlike many bacteria that survive well in the environment, Mycoplasma organisms are relatively fragile outside the host, though they can persist briefly on contaminated surfaces and in aerosols.
The impact of Mycoplasma infection on avian health varies considerably depending on the specific organism, the host species, and environmental factors. Respiratory involvement produces chronic respiratory disease with nasal discharge, swollen sinuses, breathing difficulties, and reduced activity. Eye involvement causes conjunctivitis that may progress to severe inflammation and potentially permanent damage. Joint infections produce lameness and swelling that can become chronic and debilitating. Reproductive involvement reduces fertility and hatch rates, with significant economic impact in breeding operations. Chronic infections may cause slow deterioration of health over months, while acute outbreaks in susceptible populations can produce rapid spread with significant morbidity and mortality.
Treatment of Mycoplasma infection requires antibiotics active against these cell wall-deficient organisms, primarily tetracyclines, macrolides, and fluoroquinolones. While treatment can reduce clinical signs and organism shedding, complete elimination of Mycoplasma is often difficult to achieve, and treated birds may remain carriers capable of transmitting infection. Avian veterinary care is essential for accurate diagnosis, appropriate antibiotic selection, and development of management strategies that address both individual bird treatment and flock or household disease control. Prevention through biosecurity measures and, in commercial poultry, vaccination programs represents the most effective approach to controlling Mycoplasma diseases.
