Infraorbital sinusitis is an infection and inflammation of the infraorbital sinus, a significant air-filled cavity located below and around the eye in birds. The avian infraorbital sinus is much more extensive than sinuses in mammals, extending across much of the face and connecting with the nasal passages and other sinus spaces. When this sinus becomes infected, the resulting inflammation and accumulation of exudate causes characteristic swelling of the periorbital area, which often becomes the most obvious sign owners notice. This condition is common in companion birds and requires veterinary treatment to resolve.
Infraorbital sinusitis typically develops as a complication of upper respiratory infections, vitamin A deficiency, or both factors working together. Bacteria are the most common causative agents, though fungal infections can also involve the sinuses. Vitamin A deficiency predisposes birds to sinusitis by causing changes to the epithelial lining of the sinuses, reducing their ability to resist infection. The enclosed nature of the sinus spaces means that once infection becomes established, it can be difficult to resolve without appropriate treatment that reaches inside the affected cavities.
The impact of infraorbital sinusitis on affected birds extends beyond local discomfort. Swelling around the eye can interfere with vision. Pressure from accumulated exudate causes pain. Nasal passages connected to the sinuses may also be affected, impairing breathing. Chronic infection drains the bird's resources and can lead to systemic illness if not controlled. The visible facial swelling is distressing to owners and indicates significant disease that should not be ignored. Left untreated, sinusitis can become chronic and increasingly difficult to resolve.
The condition is treatable with appropriate veterinary care, though treatment often requires more than simple antibiotic therapy. Many cases require sinus flushing to remove accumulated exudate and deliver medication directly to the affected cavity. Systemic antibiotics or antifungals address the underlying infection. Vitamin A supplementation corrects deficiency that may have predisposed the bird to infection. With comprehensive treatment addressing both the immediate infection and underlying factors, most birds recover well. Some cases become chronic and require ongoing management.
