Vitamin D is essential for calcium absorption and bone health, but as a fat-soluble vitamin, it can accumulate to toxic levels when intake exceeds the body's requirements. This condition is particularly dangerous because it causes irreversible damage to vital organs, especially the kidneys and cardiovascular system. While less common than vitamin D deficiency, hypervitaminosis D can be life-threatening and requires immediate veterinary intervention when suspected.
The primary causes of vitamin D toxicity in birds include over-supplementation with vitamin D products, use of rodenticides containing cholecalciferol, and rarely, excessive UV light exposure combined with supplementation. Well-intentioned bird owners may provide vitamin D supplements without realizing the dangers of excess, particularly if their bird is already receiving adequate vitamin D through a formulated diet. Some rodenticides use high concentrations of vitamin D3 as their active ingredient, and birds that consume these products or poisoned rodents can develop acute, severe toxicity. The condition can develop rapidly with acute high-dose exposure or insidiously with chronic moderate over-supplementation.
The impact of hypervitaminosis D on avian health is severe and potentially devastating. Excess vitamin D dramatically increases calcium absorption from the intestines and mobilization from bones, leading to hypercalcemia. This elevated blood calcium then deposits in soft tissues throughout the body, including the kidneys, blood vessels, heart, and other organs. The kidneys are particularly vulnerable, and calcium deposits can cause progressive and irreversible kidney damage. Cardiovascular effects include calcification of blood vessel walls and heart tissue, impairing normal function. The widespread nature of soft tissue calcification means that multiple organ systems may be affected simultaneously.
Treatment for hypervitaminosis D must begin immediately upon diagnosis and focuses on reducing blood calcium levels, supporting kidney function, and preventing further vitamin D absorption. Prognosis depends heavily on the severity of toxicity and how quickly treatment is initiated. Birds with mild toxicity caught early may recover fully, but those with significant organ calcification often have permanent damage. Some birds die despite aggressive treatment, particularly in cases of acute severe toxicity. Prevention through appropriate vitamin D intake, avoidance of over-supplementation, and keeping rodenticides away from birds is essential.
