Different strains of the virus show varying degrees of host specificity, with fowlpox virus primarily affecting chickens and turkeys, while related viruses such as pigeonpox and canarypox affect their respective species. The virus spreads through direct contact with infected birds, through mechanical transmission by biting insects such as mosquitoes, and through contact with contaminated surfaces or equipment. The impact of Fowl Pox on affected birds depends largely on which form of the disease develops. The dry or cutaneous form causes warty growths on unfeathered areas of the skin, including the comb, wattles, face, and legs. The wet or diphtheritic form is considerably more serious, causing yellowish plaques and pseudomembranes in the mouth, throat, and upper respiratory tract that can interfere with breathing and eating. Prevention through vaccination is highly effective and is recommended for flocks in areas where the disease is endemic or where mosquito populations pose ongoing transmission risks.
