Drafts in indoor environments come from numerous sources that bird owners may not immediately recognize. Windows and doors, even when closed, may allow cold air infiltration around frames and seals. Air conditioning vents and fans create directed airflow that may pass through bird housing areas. Heating systems may create temperature differentials that generate air currents as warm air rises and cool air sinks. Open floor plans allow air movement between spaces. Even ceiling fans operating at low speed can create enough air movement to affect birds positioned below them. The key factor is not necessarily the temperature of the moving air but rather the continuous movement itself, which strips away the layer of warm air a bird maintains around its body.
The health impact of draft exposure ranges from mild stress to serious illness, depending on the intensity and duration of exposure and the individual bird's health status. Mild exposure may cause only behavioral changes as birds try to escape the draft or conserve heat. More significant exposure leads to chilling, which stresses the thermoregulatory system and diverts energy from immune function. Chronic draft exposure can result in recurrent respiratory infections, general debilitation, and reduced quality of life. Severe acute exposure, particularly in small or already compromised birds, can cause hypothermia that may be life-threatening.
Addressing draft exposure is primarily a matter of prevention through appropriate cage placement and environmental management. Once a bird has become ill due to draft-related stress, supportive veterinary care may be necessary to treat any resulting infections or complications.
