Proventricular Dilatation Disease (PDD), formerly known as Macaw Wasting Disease, is a devastating viral condition that affects the nervous system and gastrointestinal tract of parrots, including conures. The disease is caused by Avian Bornavirus (ABV), which targets the nerves controlling the gastrointestinal tract as well as the central nervous system. PDD was first recognized in the 1970s in imported macaws and has since been identified in a wide range of psittacine species worldwide. The condition is one of the most significant threats to captive parrot populations, causing progressive deterioration that is often fatal despite treatment efforts.
Avian Bornavirus causes disease by inducing an inflammatory response in nervous tissue throughout the body. The most commonly affected nerves are those of the gastrointestinal tract, leading to impaired motility and the characteristic dilation of the proventriculus (the glandular stomach) that gives the disease its name. However, PDD is fundamentally a neurological disease, and the virus can affect any part of the nervous system. When the central nervous system is involved, birds may develop seizures, incoordination, paralysis, and other neurological symptoms. The disease is progressive, and while some birds may survive for extended periods with management, there is currently no cure.
The impact of PDD on affected birds is profound and multifaceted. Gastrointestinal involvement leads to progressive weight loss despite maintained appetite, as food cannot be properly digested and absorbed. Birds may pass undigested food in their droppings, a hallmark sign of the disease. Neurological involvement can cause a range of debilitating symptoms affecting quality of life. The progressive nature of the disease means that affected birds gradually decline over weeks to months, though the rate of progression varies considerably between individuals. The emotional toll on owners watching their beloved companions deteriorate is significant.
Treatment of PDD focuses on supportive care and managing inflammation, as there is no cure for the viral infection. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as celecoxib or meloxicam are commonly used to reduce the inflammatory damage to nervous tissue and can significantly slow disease progression in some birds. Dietary modification to provide easily digestible nutrition supports birds with impaired gastrointestinal function. While prognosis is guarded, some birds live for years with appropriate management. Understanding of PDD continues to evolve as research advances, offering hope for improved treatments in the future. Early detection and intervention offer the best chance for prolonged survival with acceptable quality of life.
