The body requires choline for the synthesis of phospholipids, which are essential components of cell membranes, and for the production of acetylcholine, a crucial neurotransmitter. Choline deficiency has significant impacts on multiple body systems. The most visible effects often involve skeletal deformities, particularly perosis or slipped tendon, where the gastrocnemius tendon slips from its groove, causing severe leg deformities. The liver becomes infiltrated with fat, leading to hepatic lipidosis, while neurological function may be compromised due to inadequate neurotransmitter production. Young birds may experience stunted growth, poor feather development, and decreased immune function. Breeding hens with choline deficiency may produce eggs with poor hatchability and chicks with developmental abnormalities.
Fortunately, choline deficiency is highly preventable and treatable when caught early. Providing a balanced diet that includes choline-rich foods such as eggs, legumes, and quality formulated pellets can prevent the condition entirely. When deficiency occurs, dietary supplementation with choline chloride or choline bitartrate, combined with improved overall nutrition, typically results in significant improvement. However, skeletal deformities that have already developed may be permanent, emphasizing the critical importance of prevention and early intervention. Working with an avian veterinarian to assess dietary adequacy and implement appropriate nutritional corrections is essential for birds showing signs of this deficiency.
