A choanal abscess is a localized collection of pus and infected material that develops in or around the choana, which is the internal opening connecting the nasal passages to the oral cavity in birds. The choana appears as a slit-like opening in the roof of the mouth, surrounded by specialized tissue including choanal papillae, which are small finger-like projections that line the opening. When infection develops in this area, the resulting abscess can cause significant discomfort, interfere with normal breathing and feeding, and indicate underlying health problems that need to be addressed. Choanal abscesses are relatively common in companion birds and require veterinary treatment for resolution.
Choanal abscesses typically develop as a complication of chronic upper respiratory infection, vitamin A deficiency, or a combination of both factors. The choana is particularly vulnerable to infection because it represents a junction between the respiratory and digestive systems, exposing it to pathogens from both routes. When the normal protective barriers are compromised, bacteria can establish infection and form abscesses. Vitamin A deficiency is a common predisposing factor because this vitamin is essential for maintaining healthy mucous membranes throughout the respiratory tract, and deficiency leads to changes that make infection more likely.
The impact of a choanal abscess extends beyond localized infection. Birds with choanal abscesses often have difficulty breathing normally as the abscess obstructs airflow through the choana. Eating may become uncomfortable, leading to reduced food intake and weight loss. The infection can spread to adjacent structures including the sinuses, nasal passages, and potentially the lower respiratory tract. The presence of an abscess also indicates that the bird's immune defenses have been compromised, suggesting the need for comprehensive health evaluation beyond just treating the immediate infection.
Choanal abscesses are treatable with appropriate veterinary care, but treatment typically requires more than just antibiotics. Most abscesses need to be physically drained or debrided to remove the accumulated infected material, as antibiotics alone cannot effectively penetrate the walled-off abscess cavity. Following drainage, antimicrobial therapy addresses remaining infection. Equally important is identifying and correcting predisposing factors, particularly vitamin A deficiency, to prevent recurrence. With comprehensive treatment addressing both the abscess and underlying factors, most birds recover well, though some require ongoing management to prevent recurrence.
