Chlamydiosis, also known as psittacosis or parrot fever, is a significant bacterial infection caused by Chlamydia psittaci that affects the respiratory system and multiple organ systems in birds. This disease is of particular importance in avian medicine not only because of its impact on bird health but also because it is a zoonotic disease, meaning it can be transmitted from birds to humans. The infection is found worldwide and can affect virtually any bird species, though it is most commonly diagnosed in psittacine birds such as parrots, cockatiels, budgerigars, and macaws. Chlamydiosis represents one of the most important infectious diseases to consider in any sick bird, particularly those with respiratory signs, due to its prevalence, zoonotic potential, and treatability when properly diagnosed.
Chlamydia psittaci is an obligate intracellular bacterium, meaning it must live inside host cells to survive and reproduce. The organism is transmitted primarily through inhalation of contaminated dust from dried fecal material, feather dust, or respiratory secretions from infected birds. Birds can shed the organism even when appearing healthy, making asymptomatic carriers an important source of environmental contamination and disease transmission. Once inhaled, the bacteria infect cells of the respiratory tract and can spread to other organs including the liver, spleen, and kidneys. The infection triggers an inflammatory response that can range from mild respiratory signs to severe systemic illness depending on the strain of bacteria, the infectious dose, and the host's immune status.
The impact of chlamydiosis on affected birds varies considerably from subclinical infection with no apparent signs to severe, life-threatening disease. Respiratory involvement causes signs ranging from mild nasal discharge to severe pneumonia and air sacculitis. Systemic involvement can cause hepatitis, splenomegaly, enteritis, and generalized illness. Young birds and those with compromised immune systems typically experience more severe disease. Stress from transport, overcrowding, breeding, or concurrent illness can trigger clinical disease in birds that were previously asymptomatic carriers. Because birds often appear healthy while shedding the organism, chlamydiosis can spread silently through collections and to human contacts before being recognized.
Chlamydiosis is treatable with appropriate antibiotic therapy, typically doxycycline administered over an extended period of forty-five days. However, treatment must be complete and consistent to achieve cure, and follow-up testing is recommended to confirm elimination of the organism. The zoonotic nature of chlamydiosis requires that bird owners and veterinary staff take appropriate precautions during handling and treatment of infected birds. Human infections range from mild flu-like illness to severe pneumonia requiring hospitalization, so prompt diagnosis and treatment of infected birds protects both the birds and their human caregivers. Any bird with respiratory signs should be considered for chlamydiosis testing, particularly in households with immunocompromised individuals.
