The condition develops when pathogenic bacteria, most commonly Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, Escherichia coli, or Pasteurella species, gain access to the bloodstream through various routes including wounds, respiratory infections, gastrointestinal disease, or contaminated injection sites. Once in the circulatory system, these bacteria can attach to the heart valves or damaged endocardial tissue, where they multiply and form characteristic vegetative growths composed of bacteria, fibrin, platelets, and inflammatory cells. The heart valves most commonly affected in birds are the mitral and aortic valves, though any valve or area of endocardium can potentially become infected.
The impact of bacterial endocarditis on avian health is profound and multifaceted. As vegetative lesions grow on the heart valves, they interfere with normal valve function, leading to regurgitation of blood and decreased cardiac efficiency. This places enormous strain on the heart, which must work harder to maintain adequate circulation. Additionally, fragments of the vegetative material can break off and travel through the bloodstream as septic emboli, potentially causing secondary infections in organs such as the liver, spleen, kidneys, and brain. The systemic nature of this infection means that affected birds often present with generalized illness rather than specific cardiac symptoms.
Bacterial endocarditis is considered a medical emergency in avian patients, and early detection combined with aggressive treatment is essential for survival. With prompt diagnosis and appropriate long-term antibiotic therapy, some birds can recover from this condition, though the prognosis varies considerably depending on the extent of cardiac damage, the causative organism, and the bird's overall health status. Recurrence is a significant concern, and many birds require ongoing monitoring even after apparent recovery.
