Earthworms are an excellent staple food, providing complete nutrition and being readily accepted by most individuals. Red worms, nightcrawlers, and blackworms all work well and can be offered whole to adults or cut into appropriate pieces for smaller individuals. Earthworms should be gut-loaded by feeding them nutritious foods before offering them to newts, enhancing their nutritional value. Aquatic worms like blackworms and tubifex worms are also relished, though tubifex should be purchased from reputable sources to avoid introducing parasites.
Bloodworms, both live and frozen, are enthusiastically consumed and make excellent dietary variety. Frozen bloodworms should be thawed in tank water before feeding. Brine shrimp can be offered occasionally but are less nutritionally complete and should be supplemented with more substantial foods. Live blackworms trigger strong hunting responses and provide enrichment beyond their nutritional value. Commercial newt and salamander pellets can be offered and many individuals will accept them, though whole prey items should form the diet's foundation.
Small feeder fish like guppies or mosquito fish can be offered occasionally for variety and enrichment, allowing natural hunting behaviors. However, fish should not constitute the majority of the diet and should be gut-loaded and disease-free. Some keepers avoid feeder fish entirely due to disease risks, relying instead on invertebrate prey. Mealworms can be offered sparingly to adults but should be freshly molted or have their heads crushed to prevent intestinal damage from the hard exoskeleton. Waxworms are too fatty for regular feeding but can be used occasionally as treats.
Feeding frequency depends on the newt's age, size, and body condition. Adults should be fed 2-3 times per week, with each feeding offering enough food that the newt appears slightly plump afterward but not uncomfortably bloated. Juvenile and subadult newts grow rapidly and require more frequent feeding—every other day or daily for very young animals. Monitor body condition carefully; underfed newts appear thin with visible hip bones and lack the rounded, healthy appearance of well-fed individuals. Overfeeding can lead to obesity and water quality issues from excess waste.
Supplementation is generally unnecessary for Spanish Ribbed Newts fed varied diets of whole prey, as earthworms and other invertebrates provide complete nutrition. However, keepers may choose to dust prey items with calcium powder once weekly or once every other week, particularly for growing juveniles or breeding females preparing to lay eggs. Avoid over-supplementation, which can cause health issues. Vitamin supplements containing vitamin A, vitamin D3, and calcium with a 2:1 calcium-to-phosphorus ratio are suitable when used sparingly.
Feeding methods can vary based on preference and newt behavior. Many keepers drop food directly into the tank, allowing newts to hunt naturally. Others use feeding tongs to offer individual food items, which allows precise portion control and ensures each newt receives adequate food in group settings. Feeding tongs also provide interaction between keeper and newt, as these animals quickly learn to recognize feeding tools and will approach eagerly. Remove uneaten food after 24 hours to prevent water quality degradation. Spanish Ribbed Newts have excellent appetites and rarely refuse food unless ill, stressed, or overfed, making feeding problems uncommon with this species.
