The Spanish Ribbed Newt (Pleurodeles waltl) is the largest species of newt found in Europe and one of the most distinctive amphibians on the continent. Its native range spans the Iberian Peninsula — encompassing much of central, southern, and western Spain as well as Portugal — and extends across the Strait of Gibraltar into the coastal and interior lowlands of Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia. Within this range, the species occupies a variety of freshwater and semi-aquatic habitats, from natural ponds, marshes, and slow-moving streams to artificial water bodies such as agricultural cisterns, wells, irrigation ditches, and even the flooded basements of buildings. This remarkable adaptability to human-modified landscapes has been a defining feature of the species throughout its recorded history.
Pleurodeles waltl is a member of the family Salamandridae, the true salamanders and newts, and belongs to a genus that has deep evolutionary roots in the western Mediterranean basin. Fossil evidence and molecular phylogenetic analyses place the divergence of the genus Pleurodeles from its closest relatives in the late Miocene or early Pliocene, a period during which the Mediterranean region underwent dramatic climatic and geological changes. The closing and reopening of the connection between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, the desiccation event known as the Messinian Salinity Crisis, and subsequent climatic oscillations all shaped the biogeographic history of the lineage. The present-day distribution of Pleurodeles waltl across both sides of the Strait of Gibraltar reflects a colonization history that predates the current configuration of the strait.
Ecologically, the Spanish Ribbed Newt occupies a mid-level predatory niche in the freshwater communities it inhabits. Adults are opportunistic feeders, consuming aquatic invertebrates including insect larvae, worms, snails, and small crustaceans, as well as amphibian eggs and tadpoles of other species. Larger individuals have been documented feeding on small fish in captivity and likely do so in the wild where opportunity permits. The species is predominantly aquatic, spending the majority of its life in water, though it is capable of overland movement during periods of rainfall, particularly when dispersing to new water bodies or responding to the seasonal drying of its habitat.
The most immediately striking anatomical feature of the Spanish Ribbed Newt — and the one responsible for its common name — is its capacity to force its own rib tips through specialized pores along the sides of its body when threatened. This defensive mechanism, virtually unique among vertebrates, results in the rib tips protruding through the skin, where they are coated with a mildly toxic secretion from granular glands in the dermis. The effect is a series of sharp, venom-tipped points presented to any predator that attempts to mouth or swallow the newt. Studies have confirmed that this is an active defense rather than an accidental consequence of handling, and the skin heals rapidly after the ribs retract, leaving the newt apparently unharmed by the process.
