Add variety with grated butternut squash, yellow squash, bell peppers (all colors), green beans, and small amounts of carrots. Fresh herbs including basil, cilantro, parsley, and mint provide nutritional diversity and enrichment. Seeds and grains represent an important dietary component often overlooked by new keepers. In nature, Mali Uromastyx consume substantial quantities of seeds from desert grasses and plants, particularly during dry seasons when fresh vegetation is limited. In captivity, offer bird seed mixtures (avoiding fatty sunflower seeds), millet, lentils (dry or sprouted), and small amounts of whole grains. Seeds should comprise approximately 5-10% of diet volume, providing important fats and proteins within their herbivorous framework. Some keepers sprinkle seeds over salads, while others offer them separately. This seed component is particularly important for Mali Uromastyx given the seasonally variable nature of their wild diet.
Cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, kale, bok choy) should be offered only occasionally and in limited quantities as they contain goitrogens interfering with thyroid function if fed excessively. Spinach and beet greens contain oxalates binding calcium and should similarly be limited. Calcium supplementation differs from insectivorous reptiles. Because their diet consists entirely of plant matter naturally containing calcium (particularly dark leafy greens), excessive supplementation causes problems. Lightly dust vegetables with calcium powder (without vitamin D3 if UVB is adequate) 2-3 times weekly rather than daily. Once weekly, use calcium with D3 and a comprehensive reptile multivitamin. Monitor for signs of metabolic bone disease, but avoid heavy calcium coating making food unpalatable. Feeding frequency varies by age. Juveniles under one year should receive fresh vegetables daily to fuel rapid growth. Sub-adults (1-2 years) can transition to every-other-day feeding. Adults do well on every other day or 3-4 times weekly feeding schedules, though daily small portions are also acceptable. Adjust based on body conditionâhealthy adults should have robust, muscular bodies with thick tail bases indicating substantial fat reserves, but without obvious obesity. New acquisitions often experience stress-related feeding pauses lasting days to weeks, with Mali Uromastyx sometimes showing longer acclimation periods than other species. This is normal and expected. Maintain absolutely optimal temperatures (this is criticalâthey will not eat if too cold, and their extreme temperature requirements mean even slight under-heating causes feeding refusal), provide varied food options, minimize disturbance, and be patient. Most begin feeding within 2-4 weeks once secure and properly warmed.
