An adult Egyptian Uromastyx is among the largest species in the genus, routinely reaching 24 to 36 inches in total length and weighing between 1,500 and 2,500 grams at full maturity. Housing an animal of this size and activity level requires a permanent enclosure that reflects both the species' physical dimensions and its biological requirements. The minimum recommended enclosure for a single adult is six feet long by three feet deep by two feet tall, though larger is always preferable. Custom-built wooden or PVC enclosures are favored by experienced keepers over glass aquariums because they retain heat far more efficiently, reduce visual stress by limiting transparent surfaces, and can be constructed to exact specifications that accommodate the heavy heating and lighting infrastructure this species demands.
The thermal gradient within the adult enclosure remains the most critical husbandry parameter. A primary basking surface temperature of 120 to 150 degrees Fahrenheit must be maintained, with some individuals preferring to bask at temperatures that approach the upper end of this range. This is achieved using one or more high-wattage halogen flood bulbs directed at a large, flat basking platform constructed from natural flagstone, slate, or stacked tile. The basking platform should be broad enough for the animal's entire body to rest on the heated surface simultaneously, as partial basking leads to uneven core temperature elevation and suboptimal digestion. The cool end of the enclosure should maintain daytime temperatures of 80 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit, with a nighttime drop to 65 to 75 degrees across the entire enclosure.
Substrate in the adult enclosure should be deep enough to support the elaborate burrow systems that are central to the species' behavioral repertoire. A minimum depth of eight to twelve inches of firmly packed sand-soil blend allows the adult to excavate and maintain multi-chambered burrows that serve thermoregulatory, hydration, and security functions. In the wild, Egyptian Uromastyx occupy burrows that extend several feet underground, where temperatures and humidity levels differ markedly from the scorching surface environment. Replicating even a fraction of this subterranean complexity in captivity dramatically improves behavioral diversity and reduces stereotypic stress behaviors such as glass-surfing and repetitive pacing.
UVB lighting for the adult enclosure requires careful planning to ensure effective coverage across the large floor area. A high-output T5 linear UVB tube rated at 12 to 14 percent, measuring at least 36 to 48 inches in length, should be mounted inside the enclosure within 12 to 15 inches of the primary basking area. The UVB source should overlap with the basking zone so that the animal receives simultaneous heat and ultraviolet exposure during its natural basking behavior, replicating the conditions of basking under direct desert sunlight. Bulbs must be replaced on the manufacturer's recommended schedule, typically every six to twelve months, and a UV radiometer provides the most reliable method of verifying that output remains within the therapeutic range.
