For farms in warm climates, Guernseys handle heat reasonably well compared to European breeds, though no dairy cow is at her best in extreme summer heat. Yes, you'll pay more for a cow with a fresh date and a milking history. That premium is worth every penny when you're learning. The heifer will have her turn once you've developed the technique and confidence to train a first-calf heifer without making her miserable in the process.

One last thing worth saying: don't neglect to record your production numbers from the beginning. Even a simple notebook tracking daily milk yield tells you an enormous amount about your cow's health and nutritional status over time. A cow that drops two quarts from her typical daily yield is telling you something, and if you don't know what her typical yield is because you never wrote it down, you've lost that early signal. Good records are not bureaucracy - they're the difference between catching a problem on day one and catching it on day ten.
