The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is an elegant toy spaniel with a graceful, well-balanced appearance that has made it a beloved companion breed for centuries. Standing between 12 and 13 inches at the shoulder and weighing 13 to 18 pounds, the Cavalier presents a compact yet athletic silhouette. The body is slightly longer than tall with a level topline, moderate bone, and sufficient substance to suggest an active, sporting nature while maintaining refinement. The chest is moderately deep with well-sprung ribs, and the tail is carried happily but never much above the level of the back, often wagging continuously in a characteristic display of the breed's cheerful disposition. The Cavalier's coat is one of its crowning glories, consisting of moderately long, silky fur that may have a slight wave but is never curly. Feathering adorns the ears, chest, legs, feet, and tail, adding to the breed's elegant appearance. Four color patterns are recognized: Blenheim, featuring rich chestnut markings on a pearly white background often with a distinctive chestnut spot on the forehead; Tricolor, consisting of jet black and white with tan markings over the eyes and on the cheeks; Black and Tan, showing jet black with rich tan markings; and Ruby, a solid rich reddish-brown throughout. The breed requires regular grooming to maintain coat condition and prevent matting, particularly in the feathered areas.

The Maltese is a diminutive toy breed renowned for its stunning floor-length white coat and aristocratic bearing that has captivated admirers for thousands of years. Standing between 7 and 10 inches at the shoulder and typically weighing under 7 pounds, with the breed standard preferring 4 to 6 pounds, the Maltese presents a picture of refined elegance in a tiny package. Despite their delicate appearance, they possess a compact, well-proportioned body with a level topline and sufficient substance for their size. The chest is fairly deep, the ribs are well-sprung, and the tuck-up is slight, creating a balanced silhouette that moves with surprising vigor and grace. The head is proportionate to the body with a slightly rounded skull, a medium-length muzzle that tapers slightly but is never snipey, and a black nose with well-open nostrils. The eyes are large, round, and very dark, set moderately apart with black rims that create an alert, gentle expression full of intelligence and affection. The drop ears are set low and lie close to the head, heavily feathered with long hair that blends seamlessly into the coat. The neck is of sufficient length to allow high head carriage, adding to the breed's proud, elegant demeanor. The legs are fine-boned and nicely feathered, moving with a smooth, flowing gait that showcases the coat. The Maltese coat is its most spectacular feature, consisting of long, silky, single-layer hair without an undercoat. The coat hangs straight and flat along the body, parting naturally down the spine and flowing nearly to the floor in mature specimens maintained in full coat. The color is pure white, though slight ivory or light tan coloring is permissible on the ears. Without an undercoat, the Maltese sheds minimally, making the breed popular among those sensitive to dog dander, though they are not truly hypoallergenic. The tail is plumed with long hair and carried gracefully over the back. Maintaining the full show coat requires daily grooming and regular bathing, though many pet owners opt for shorter, more practical trims that are easier to manage.
