The Southern Hognose Snake (Heterodon simus) is a small, stout-bodied colubrid native to the sandy coastal plains and interior sandhills of the southeastern United States. Its range historically extended from southern North Carolina through South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida, and westward into portions of Alabama and Mississippi. The species is closely associated with habitats defined by loose, well-drained soils, particularly longleaf pine savannas, scrubby flatwoods, and coastal dune systems where it can use its distinctively upturned rostral scale to burrow in search of prey and shelter.
The species was formally described by the Swedish-American naturalist Carl Linnaeus in 1766, based on specimens originating from the Carolina colonies. Linnaeus placed the animal within the broader framework of his binomial nomenclature system, though subsequent taxonomic revisions reassigned it multiple times before it settled into its current position within the genus Heterodon. The genus name, derived from the Greek words for "different" and "tooth," references the enlarged rear teeth characteristic of all hognose snakes, a feature that puzzled early naturalists who debated whether these small serpents should be considered venomous.
Eighteenth-century naturalists working in the American Southeast encountered the Southern Hognose Snake alongside its larger and more widespread relative, the Eastern Hognose Snake (Heterodon platirhinos). Distinguishing the two species required careful observation, as both share the upturned snout and dramatic defensive displays for which the genus is famous. Mark Catesby, the English naturalist whose monumental work on the flora and fauna of the Carolinas appeared in the 1730s and 1740s, documented hognose snakes in the region, though his illustrations and descriptions did not always clearly differentiate between the species now recognized within the genus.
The Southern Hognose Snake's relatively modest size, seldom exceeding two feet in length, and its preference for sandy habitats that were often difficult for collectors to access meant that it received less scientific attention during the nineteenth century than many larger or more conspicuous North American snake species. Nonetheless, herpetologists working in the post-Civil War era began to accumulate enough specimens and field observations to develop a clearer picture of the species' distribution, natural history, and relationship to other members of the genus.
