The Skaapsteker's geographic range spans a broad swath of southern Africa, offering field observers multiple ecologically distinct regions in which to seek out this adaptable grassland serpent. The Rhombic Skaapsteker (Psammophylax rhombeatus), the most commonly encountered species in the genus, is found across virtually all of South Africa's provinces, as well as in Lesotho, Eswatini, and the southern portions of Zimbabwe and Mozambique. The Striped Skaapsteker (Psammophylax tritaeniatus) occupies a partially overlapping range with a stronger presence in the eastern and northeastern parts of southern Africa, extending into tropical East Africa.
Within South Africa, the Skaapsteker is most reliably encountered in open grassland habitats on the highveld plateau, the montane grasslands of the Drakensberg escarpment, the coastal grasslands and fynbos of the Western and Eastern Cape, and the semi-arid Karoo scrublands of the interior. Each of these habitat types supports Skaapsteker populations, but the character of the landscape and the associated reptile community varies significantly, offering field herpers the opportunity to observe the species in markedly different ecological contexts across its range.
The highveld grasslands of Gauteng, the Free State, and Mpumalanga provide some of the most accessible Skaapsteker habitat for visitors based in South Africa's major population centers. The open, rolling terrain of the highveld, punctuated by rocky outcrops and seasonal wetlands, supports healthy Skaapsteker populations alongside a diverse assemblage of other grassland reptile species. However, significant portions of the highveld have been converted to agriculture or urban development, and the best remaining grassland patches are often found in nature reserves, conservancies, and well-managed farmland rather than in heavily developed areas.
The fynbos biome of the Western Cape and Eastern Cape represents a botanically unique habitat where Skaapstekers can be found among the characteristic shrubby, fire-adapted vegetation of this globally recognized biodiversity hotspot. Observers traveling through the fynbos should be aware that this habitat supports its own distinctive reptile community, and the Skaapstekers encountered here may exhibit subtle differences in coloration and pattern compared to populations in the inland grassland regions, reflecting local adaptation to the specific conditions of the fynbos environment.
