The Plains Garter Snake (Thamnophis radix) is a small to medium-sized colubrid native to the central grasslands of North America, ranging from southern Canada through the Great Plains states of the United States and into portions of the upper Midwest. Its preferred habitats include tallgrass and mixed-grass prairies, meadows, stream margins, marshes, and the edges of agricultural fields, where it finds the moisture, ground cover, and prey base it requires. The species is among the most commonly encountered snakes across much of its range, a testament to its ecological adaptability and its tolerance for a wide variety of environmental conditions, including landscapes heavily modified by agriculture and suburban development.
The species was formally described by the American herpetologist Spencer Fullerton Baird and the French-American naturalist Charles Frederic Girard in 1853, based on specimens collected during military and civilian survey expeditions across the western territories of the United States. Baird and Girard were prolific describers of North American reptile and amphibian species during the mid-nineteenth century, working primarily from the collections housed at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. Their description of Thamnophis radix placed the species within the broader genus of garter snakes, a group already recognized as one of the most diverse and widespread snake lineages on the continent.
The specific epithet radix derives from the Latin word for root, a reference to the species' tendency to shelter among the root systems of grasses and other vegetation. This name captures a defining aspect of the snake's ecology, as the Plains Garter Snake is profoundly tied to the grassland biome and its structural features. The dense root mats of prairie grasses provide the snake with thermoregulatory opportunities, protection from predators, and access to the earthworms, amphibians, and small invertebrates that constitute the bulk of its diet.
Taxonomic understanding of the Plains Garter Snake has been refined considerably since Baird and Girard's original description. Two subspecies have traditionally been recognized: Thamnophis radix radix, the Eastern Plains Garter Snake, and Thamnophis radix haydenii, the Western Plains Garter Snake, named in honor of the geologist and surveyor Ferdinand Vandeveer Hayden, who contributed extensively to the scientific documentation of the American West. Modern molecular phylogenetic studies have continued to clarify the relationships among Thamnophis species, confirming the Plains Garter Snake's position within a radiation of garter snakes that diversified across North America's varied landscapes over millions of years.
