This examination should assess the wallaby's overall health, verify that the animal is free of signs of infectious disease, confirm that vaccinations and parasite treatments are current, and produce the documentation necessary to satisfy regulatory requirements at checkpoints and destination.
Acclimation to the transport container is one of the most important preparatory steps and should begin days or ideally weeks before the scheduled journey. Wallabies are naturally cautious animals that can become severely stressed when confined in unfamiliar enclosures, and stress in macropods can escalate to a dangerous condition known as capture myopathy — a potentially fatal syndrome in which extreme physiological stress causes muscle damage, kidney failure, and death. Introducing the transport container into the wallaby's living space well in advance of travel allows the animal to investigate, enter, and become comfortable with the enclosure at its own pace, significantly reducing the stress response when the animal is confined for actual transport.
Dietary management in the days leading up to transport requires careful attention. Many experienced wallaby transporters recommend reducing the volume of fresh greens and high-moisture foods in the twenty-four hours preceding travel to minimize gastrointestinal discomfort and reduce the frequency and volume of waste produced during transit. Access to hay should be maintained, as the continued availability of roughage supports gut motility and provides a source of comfort and occupation during the journey. Water should be available until the point of confinement and should be provided at regular intervals during longer journeys, typically through spill-resistant containers or water-soaked produce items that release moisture gradually.
The timing of transport should be planned to minimize environmental stressors, particularly heat exposure. Wallabies are susceptible to heat stress, and transport during the hottest hours of summer days poses a significant health risk. Early morning or evening travel is strongly preferred during warm-weather months, and vehicles used for transport should be equipped with air conditioning or adequate ventilation to maintain interior temperatures within a safe range. In cold weather, provision for warmth — insulated container walls, bedding material, and protected placement within the vehicle — is equally important, particularly for young or small wallabies with limited thermoregulatory capacity.
