Wallabies belong to the family Macropodidae, a diverse group of marsupials that also includes kangaroos, tree-kangaroos, pademelons, and quokkas. The term wallaby is an informal designation rather than a strict taxonomic classification, generally applied to macropods that are smaller than kangaroos but larger than the smallest members of the family such as bettongs and potoroos. Over thirty species across several genera — including Macropus, Wallabia, Petrogale, Thylogale, and Onychogalea — are commonly referred to as wallabies, reflecting a broad morphological and ecological diversity that spans rock-dwelling specialists, forest-floor browsers, and open-grassland grazers.
The evolutionary origins of macropods trace back to the late Oligocene and early Miocene epochs, roughly twenty to twenty-five million years ago, when the ancestors of modern kangaroos and wallabies began to diverge from other marsupial lineages on the Australian continent. Fossil evidence from sites across Queensland, South Australia, and New South Wales documents a rich radiation of macropod species that tracked the gradual aridification of the Australian interior, with early forms adapted to closed forest environments giving way to lineages increasingly specialized for open woodland and grassland habitats. Wallabies represent a retention of some of the more generalist body plans within this radiation, occupying ecological niches between the large, plains-adapted kangaroos and the smaller, more secretive rat-kangaroos.
The natural range of wallabies encompasses Australia, Tasmania, New Guinea, and a number of smaller islands across the Australasian region. Different species have adapted to remarkably varied habitats: rock-wallabies of the genus Petrogale inhabit rocky outcrops, cliff faces, and gorge systems across arid and semi-arid Australia, while pademelons of the genus Thylogale occupy dense rainforest and wet sclerophyll forest in eastern Australia, Tasmania, and New Guinea. The swamp wallaby, Wallabia bicolor, is found in thick coastal scrub and forest along Australia's eastern seaboard, and the agile wallaby, Macropus agilis, ranges through tropical savannas and woodland across northern Australia and southern New Guinea.
Several wallaby species have established feral populations far outside their native range as a result of escapes or deliberate releases from captive collections. Populations of Bennett's wallabies persist in parts of England, Scotland, Ireland, France, Germany, and New Zealand, while brush-tailed rock-wallabies were once established on the Hawaiian island of Oahu. These feral colonies, some dating back more than a century, demonstrate the wallaby's capacity to adapt to temperate and even cool-climate environments that differ significantly from their native Australian and New Guinean habitats.
