The species evolved at elevations ranging from approximately three thousand to over fifteen thousand feet above sea level, inhabiting a harsh environment characterized by extreme temperature fluctuations, low humidity, sparse vegetation, and rugged terrain composed of volcanic rock and barren scree. This demanding habitat shaped nearly every aspect of the chinchilla's physiology, from its extraordinarily dense fur — evolved to insulate against frigid Andean nights — to its powerful hind legs, which allow agile navigation across steep and uneven surfaces.
The historical range of Chinchilla lanigera extended across portions of what are now Chile, Peru, Bolivia, and Argentina, though the species was most densely concentrated along the Chilean and Peruvian Andes. A closely related species, Chinchilla chinchilla (formerly Chinchilla brevicaudata), occupied higher elevations and more southern reaches of the range. Both species shared the characteristic ultra-dense pelage that would ultimately drive centuries of commercial exploitation. Chinchillas are social animals that historically lived in colonies numbering from a few dozen individuals to groups of over one hundred. These colonies occupied communal burrow systems and rock crevices, emerging during twilight and nighttime hours to forage on grasses, seeds, bark, lichens, and various drought-adapted plant species. Daytime temperatures in chinchilla habitat can soar above eighty degrees Fahrenheit before plummeting below freezing after dark, demanding an animal capable of thermoregulating across a wide temperature gradient.
