Selecting an appropriate carrier is the single most important preparatory step when transporting a Southern Flying Squirrel, and the choice of carrier must reflect the species' unique combination of small body size, exceptional agility, and strong instinct to seek enclosed, dark spaces for security. Hard-sided plastic carriers designed for small animals, with secure latching mechanisms and ventilation openings too small for the squirrel to squeeze through, are generally the safest option for vehicle transport. The bar spacing on wire carriers intended for hamsters or rats is often wide enough for a motivated flying squirrel to escape, and the open visibility of a wire carrier provides none of the visual seclusion that reduces stress in this nocturnal species. A carrier approximately twelve by eight by eight inches provides adequate space for short-duration transport without being so large that the animal is thrown about by vehicle movement.
The interior of the carrier should be configured to simulate the dark, nest-like environment in which Southern Flying Squirrels naturally rest during daylight hours. A soft fleece pouch or bonding pouch placed inside the carrier serves as a retreat space that the squirrel will instinctively enter, providing both physical comfort and psychological security. The pouch should be anchored to prevent it from sliding during transit but should not be so tightly fixed that the animal cannot adjust its position within it. Additional loose bedding material such as unscented paper-based small animal bedding can be layered on the carrier floor to absorb waste and provide cushioning against vibrations transmitted through the vehicle.
Temperature regulation within the carrier is critical, as Southern Flying Squirrels are susceptible to both hypothermia and heat stress. The species' small body mass and high surface-area-to-volume ratio make it vulnerable to rapid temperature changes, and the confined space of a carrier can amplify thermal extremes. In cold weather, a hand warmer wrapped in fabric and placed beneath the carrier, separated from the animal by a layer of bedding to prevent direct contact burns, provides supplemental warmth without risk. In warm weather, the carrier must be positioned away from direct sunlight and vehicle heating vents, and a small frozen water bottle wrapped in a cloth can be placed adjacent to the carrier to provide a cool surface the animal can move toward if needed. The target ambient temperature range within the carrier is sixty-five to seventy-eight degrees Fahrenheit, approximating the thermal conditions of a tree cavity in the animal's natural habitat.
Pre-travel acclimation to the carrier can significantly reduce stress during actual transport. In the days leading up to a planned trip, placing the carrier in the animal's living space with the door open and a familiar nesting pouch inside allows the squirrel to explore and nest in the carrier voluntarily, building positive associations before the potentially stressful experience of vehicle movement. Animals that have been acclimated in this way typically settle more quickly once travel begins and exhibit fewer stress behaviors such as frantic climbing, bar chewing, or repetitive circling. For squirrels that are already bonded to their owner and accustomed to being carried in a bonding pouch on the person's body, wearing the pouch during short trips may be the least stressful transport method of all, though this approach is practical only for brief local journeys and not for extended vehicle travel.
